Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi is a generational polymath—a distinguished scientific thought leader, technological innovator, institutional leader, and one of the most compelling science communicators of our time. He currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Astro Society, which has supported astronomy, educated minds, and broadcast discoveries since 1889.
An internationally recognized astrophysicist and cosmologist, Dr. Oluseyi is the author of the award-winning, critically acclaimed memoir A Quantum Life: My Unlikely Journey from the Street to the Stars and his latest groundbreaking book, Why Do We Exist? The Nine Realms of the Universe That Make You Possible. His dramatic life story—spanning a chaotic childhood in some of America’s toughest neighborhoods to the highest echelons of space science—serves as a powerful testament to human resilience and the transformative power of discovery.
Dr. Oluseyi’s prolific scientific career encompasses astrophysics, cosmology, semiconductor manufacturing, and ion propulsion. A pioneer in space-based instrumentation, he conducted his doctoral research at Stanford University, contributing to the design, construction, and launch of the Multi-Spectral Solar Telescope Array, which advanced extreme-ultraviolet imaging of the Sun’s corona. His research and technology development have resulted in more than 100 scientific publications and 11 U.S. and international patents for pioneering manufacturing technologies that are now industry standards. In recognition of his technological breakthroughs, he was inducted into both the National Academy of Inventors and the Black Inventors Hall of Fame.
As an academic, Dr. Oluseyi has held distinguished faculty appointments and research fellowships at the world’s premier research institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Princeton University, the University of California, Berkeley, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Florida Institute of Technology, and George Mason University.
