A half-day workshop combining meditation instruction and practice, with an emphasis on the view of mindfulness and bringing it into daily life: work, relationships, and creativity.
Many people come to meditation believing its purpose is to eliminate thinking, achieve bliss, or quiet the mind. Our instructor Seth certainly did, and it probably prevented him from trying it for a long time because those things seemed impossible to achieve. While a consistent mindfulness practice does, overtime, bring a greater sense of spaciousness, calm and less reactivity to the world, what Seth has found most appealing—and ultimately most healing—is the attitude at its heart:
Mindfulness isn’t about stopping, suppressing, or escaping our thoughts. Instead, we’re cultivating a friendly relationship with our own minds, noticing whatever arises with curiosity rather than judgment with that perspective there is nothing to achieve. From this attitude of friendliness—and with the understanding that everything is workable, even our own minds—a genuine sense of self-compassion begins to grow. As that compassion deepens, the mind naturally becomes more spacious, resilient, and at ease. Studies have shown measurable benefits to mindfulness practice. But to Seth it is applying the view and attitude which is the complementary piece to seated practice: taking the mindfulness off the cushion into life. Most of us don’t have time to meditate for hours on end in a forest day after day, as the Buddha did, and as such we have the opportunity to use our lives as practice.
During this workshop, we will discuss the view of mindfulness practice, Seth will offer instruction, and then we will practice. The afternoon will consist of small group discussions with a wrap up discussing how we apply this to our lives.
