The Architecture of Human Spaceflight

September 17 | 4:30 – 5:30 PM

We are going back to the Moon, and this time to stay. Artemis and the commercial stations are designing the first places people will live off Earth, while the technology that keeps crews healthy stalls in “the valley of death.” Sixty years of hard-won knowledge is leaving with the space architects who built the field, and the human data that commercial spaceflight now produces stays with the company that paid for the flight. Anastasia Prosina works on both halves, the record and the body, and makes the case for a lab built to carry them across.

The Listening Room

The Virtuoso Trumpet

September 18| 6:00 PM

Recently completing a national  tour with a consortium of orchestras premiering a new concerto by Grammy Award winner Jeff Scott, Mary Bowden is one of the most in-demand trumpet soloists of our generation. Known for her beautiful and dulcet tones, Ms. Bowden will make her debut appearance at Evermay, and will be our first ever trumpet soloist to grace our stage! Among other works, she will be performing the trendsetting trumpet Trio by American composer Eric Ewazen with guest violinist Emily Ilyes.

Attentional Literacy in the Age of Algorithmic Capture

September 29 | 4:30 – 5:30 PM

In a world engineered to capture our attention, few of us are ever taught how to work skillfully with it. Educator and contemplative practitioner Mercedes Laney invites the audience into this inquiry directly, rather than presenting a finished framework. Her session blends a short talk with a moderated panel and participatory exercises exploring how attention shifts, in real time, within individuals and groups.

The Great Questions Studio: Questions Worth Living

October 1 | 6:00 – 7:30 PM

Three interrelated, timeless questions are introduced: What does it mean to be human? Who or what is bigger than me? And how am I to live? How a person answers these questions, consciously or unconsciously, determines the shape of a life. We explore what it means to live those questions consciously and start the process in community. The Great Questions Studio is a four-week workshop at Evermay that explores life’s big questions through curated readings, dialogue and reflection, facilitated by Rev. Dr. Karissa Thacker.

The Great Questions Studio: What Does It Mean to Be Human?

October 8 | 6:00 – 7:30 PM

How people understand what it means to be human shifts with time and culture. What are the possibilities of human life? This question is especially poignant in the age of artificial intelligence. Much of recent human history — the last five hundred years — has primarily defined humanity as distinctive due to cognitive ability. The Great Questions Studio is a four-week workshop at Evermay that explores life’s big questions through curated readings, dialogue and reflection, facilitated by Rev. Dr. Karissa Thacker.

Having recently returned from a rigorous summer tour of Europe, the two will showcase the virtuosity and musical subtleties the flute and the oboe have to offer!

The Great Questions Studio: Who or What Is Bigger Than Me?

October 15 | 6:00 – 7:30 PM

The notion of transcendence is a key consideration in all world religions. In our modern world, religious claims are often met with skepticism. However, the question remains. Modern psychology has clarified that humans are healthier and more satisfied with life’s ups and downs when they believe in something bigger than themselves. The Great Questions Studio is a four-week workshop at Evermay that explores life’s big questions through curated readings, dialogue and reflection, facilitated by Rev. Dr. Karissa Thacker.

The Images That Made Us, The Images That Set Us Free: Mapping an Emerging Field at the Edge of Memory, Emotion, and Self-Recognition

October 21 | 4:30 – 5:30 PM

What does it take to truly recognize — and return to — ourselves, as our images multiply and our avatars arrive? Multidisciplinary artist and researcher Dasha Dare presents a map of an emerging field, built around her hypothesis that meeting one’s own eyes in an image made at a moment of emotional intensity can open a doorway to memory the body has stored but never resolved.

The Great Questions Studio: How Are We to Live? What Should We Do?

October 22 | 6:00 – 7:30 PM

Our culture is full of prescriptions for how we should live — what we should be doing. How are we to live if we take into account our philosophy of what it means to be human and our sense of transcendence? Each question is inextricably linked. The Great Questions Studio is a four-week workshop at Evermay that explores life’s big questions through curated readings, dialogue and reflection, facilitated by Rev. Dr. Karissa Thacker.
